Memorable Monday
My Elementary Years

I started kindergarten in Vernal, Utah in 1974.  I attended Maeser Elementary School from kindergarten til 2nd grade. Our Principal was Mr. Tingey, a family friend.  My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Beckstead and  a good friend of mine, Mishell Luck, was in my class.  Since I was the oldest kid, my mom took me to school for a few days until I was used to attending school before riding the bus.  The day finally came when it was my turn to start taking the bus.  She dropped me off at school and told me it was time to take the bus home.  After school, I watched my neighbors to see which bus they got on.  I got on that bus and found a seat.  I watched the kids get off the bus, but I never left my seat.  After the route was over, the bus driver asked where I lived and I didn't know.  Luckily, the bus driver figured out where I lived.  I arrived home in the arms of a crying mom who was looking everywhere for me.  I didn't realize how worried my mom was until I was much older.  My sister was a year behind me in school, so when I was in 2nd grade, she was in 1st grade.  One day, our teachers decided to play a joke on us and we switched grades.  The 1st graders felt super smart and proud that day, while the 2nd graders were super bummed.  Lisa enjoyed that experience more than I did.  We moved to Kearns before I finished 2nd grade.  If I don't know something, I blame it on the fact that I never finished 2nd grade.  My kept mom kept  good records of my schooling, perhaps because I was the oldest.  My first grade teacher at Maeser was Mrs. Colledge and my second grade teacher was Mrs. Kunz

I started 3rd grade in a school in Kearns.  I don't remember the name of the school and I didn't stay there very long, maybe a month.  I remember that I was going to tell the class that I was moving during show and tell at the end of the day.  I was ask to take some stuff to the office during that time, so I didn't tell my class goodbye.  That was my last day at that school.  I also remember walking home from school one day and my mom was very upset and worried.  I don't remember the school much.

I started 3rd grade twice - the second time at Sunrise Elementary in Sandy.  The district bused our neighborhood to a school far away when there were other schools close by.  I didn't understand why it took forever to get to school.  15 minutes can seem like forever to a kid.  I only went to Sunrise for a year and had Mrs Heid while I was in 3rd grade.  Lisa and Jeff also attended Sunrise Elementary with me.  I don't remember much of 3rd grade, just that I started twice and had to drive forever to get to school.

I attended Sprucewood for my 4th and 5th grade years.  I had Mrs. Skollingberg in 4th grade, and Mrs. Hansen in 5th.  Sprucewood was still far away, but not quite as far as Sunrise.  I have a lot of great memories at Sprucewood and remember playing with my friend, Stephanie Bacher.  I remember being in the Safety Patrol during 5th grade and having lunch with the principal because of my service.  I remember the layout of the building and how we switched classes.  One day, there was rumor that a big snake got loose before or after a presentation and was in the coat section.  I remember our teacher telling us that we had to sit on our desks with our feet on our chairs.  It was an exciting day to break the rules because of a snake.  I loved going to Sprucewood and loved my years there.
