Colleges

College has been a major topic at Wall family dinner. My oldest niece is looking for a college attend next fall. I remember the time I picked the colleges that I attended. When I was in high school, I wanted to attend BYU in Hawaii. Who didn't? I can dream right? I attended several colleges and feel lucky that I was able to finish and get my degree. I know that my niece will pick a good college and work to make that college work for her.
1.University of Utah - I applied to U and really wanted to go. I was accepted and had my class schedule and was ready to start. The U was the only college that I applied to during high school and was just thrilled that I was going. I been on campus and participated in a music day program earlier which made we more excited to go. My dad informed my family that we were moving to AZ in the later that year. I wanted so bad to stay in UT and go to the U. My dad felt very strongly that we should go to AZ as a family. The very first day of college, I went there to withdraw. My friends were going to the U, while I stayed home to prepare for the big move. I had a hard time at first, but I'm grateful that I followed my dad's strong feelings and stayed with the family.
2- Brigham Young University - I didn't want to go to BYU because of the rivalry with the U. I did go to the recruitment weekend with their music program just the enjoy the weekend away. I had no intention of applying. After leaving the U, I did take a correspondence class from the Y. My dad wanted me to do some schooling and correspondence was the way to go. This was before the online classes. I worked on that while preparing for the move and afterwards. It took my a year to finish that class I needed a deadline. I'm a really good procrastinator. Now, that I'm older, I wish I didn't just dismiss the Y. I probably couldn't have gone anyway, but it's a great school. I stayed on campus a year for BYU Women's Conference and really enjoyed the campus.
3. Mesa Community College - After moving to AZ, I shared my interest of going to college with my dad. He helped me find MCC and get enrolled. He paid my tuition and help figure out how to get in-state tuition. MCC was a great college for me. It was a smaller college than the U, and a great way to get started. I learned a lot about college and about myself while attending MCC. I took a lot of math classes, chemistry, and physics and decided that I wanted to go into math. I spent 3 years at MCC and loved it. I got involved in Institute, LDSSA, and Lambda Delta (church sponsored sorority). I will never forget the years spend at MCC and the life - long lessons that I learned. I graduated from MCC with an Associates Degree.
4. Arizona State University - After my years at MCC, I need to go a University to earn my Bachelor's degree. I wanted to live at home still and save my pennies, so ASU was the best choice for me. ASU is a really big university and I was in shock for the first semester. Because I was a junior, my classes were smaller and quickly found some new friends in the same program that I was in. I really had to work hard at ASU and I took math classes that I didn't even know about. I discovered that even though I like math, I don't like math theory. My last semester at ASU, I spent at Kino Junior High where I did my student teaching. That was an awesome experience and I've never worked harder in my life. I also spent 3 years at ASU and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. My dad encouraged me to work and pay for my schooling which added to my experience. I graduated with no student loans thanks to my dad's advice. I lived with my parents the entire time I went to college and didn't have to pay for food nor housing, so thanks to my parents for helping me out.

Chess Tournament

Josh competed in his first chess tournament as a member of the Taylor Chess Club. There first tournament was divided into quads. They each played 3 games and only played those players in their quad. Josh placed 1st in his quad and received a trophy. Josh has competed in chess tournaments before but this was the first time with the Taylor Chess Club. Josh loves chess and enjoys playing the game. I played with him a few days ago, and lost in 3 minutes. It'll be a while before I play him again. Congratulations to Josh and we are very proud of him.

Memorable Monday
Great-Grandma Wall

My dad's cousin came to visit this past week. It was so fun to talk with them and listen to their stories about my Great-Grandma Wall (Selma). I remember her just a little, mostly I remember that I could barely understand her. She was born in Sweden and came to the US in her early 20's. While serving a mission in Sweden, my Great-Grandpa (Conrad Wall) met her. Conrad came home from his mission, married, and had a couple of kids. His wife died shortly after. Selma crossed the Atlantic, traveled west to Utah and settled in Holladay and met Conrad again. They were married and had a couple more kids. When my dad's cousin came to town, they talked about Conrad and Selma and I learned a lot. I don't often stories about her and stories about my Great-Grandpa Wall. I really enjoyed listening and wish I could have heard more.

Here is a picture of my Great-Grandma Wall, my Grandparents, Parents, Lisa and I. My Great- Grandma passed away was I was young so I don't remember too much about her. I do remember she had a strong accent. I could barely understand much of what she said.

Arizona Fair

My sister-in-law told us about a fair that going on in Arizona. She was selling her books and generating a lot of buzz about the company at this fair. The fair was held in the University of Phoenix stadium - the Cardinal's new stadium. I wanted to see the stadium that the Cardinals finally had built after many years of controversy. It was a fun fair and we had a great time. We found Jim's brother, his wife, and little one. We spent time chatting, visiting several characters, playing, and just having a good time.

15 Shows

My high school friend sent me this tag on Facebook. It was so fun to remember the musicals and plays that I have seen and been in. I wanted to blog it so it made it in my annual blog book. This list was so fun to make and the memories came bubbling to the surface.

1. Wicked - I just saw this musical at Gammage with Jim and Dani for my birthday. After the musical was over, we bought the CD and Dani memorized every song. It was so great to hear the lyrics and remember the performance.

2. King & I - I took Dani to this musical at the Hale Theater. I wanted to see the show since I performed in the orchestra pit in high school. Dani became hooked on musicals after watching that musical. It was performed in such a small stage with a great cast. It was fun to remember the time that I played in high school.

3. Suessical the Musical - Mesa High put on this performance last Spring. I took my three girls to see it. When my girls walked into the auditorium, Thing 1 and Thing 2 entertained everyone until the show started. My three girls loved the musical and I'm so glad that I took them.

4. Phantom of the Opera - Jim invited me to see this play when we were dating. We went with his parents, siblings and their spouses, and his grandma. The musical was amazing and I loved it when the chandelier came down. The best part was sitting next to Jim, because I really liked him.

5. The Music Man - We went with Jim's family. It was Jim's first time to go to the Hale theater and he enjoyed it. I knew some of the actors which made the musical much more fun to watch.

6. Oklahoma - In high school, I played in the orchestra pit. It was a great experience for me and opened my eyes to musicals. This was my first musical out of three that I played in high school.

7. Brigadoon - This was the first and last non-high-school musical that I performed in. Get this, I played the Bass in this one. I was such a little girl playing such a big instrument. We performed this musical at the Promised Valley Playhouse.

8. Footloose - This was the first musical that I saw at the Hale theater. It was a girl's night out to celebrated Myrna's (my mother-in-law) birthday. The Hale has such great seats and a great price.

9. Lion King - Jim I saw this musical in January at Gammage. I really loved the costumes and the music. I just wished that I took my kids also - they do too! I did buy the music and book for the kids to enjoy.

10. Oklahoma - I saw this musical at Taylor Junior High several years ago. I was so amazed at the talent these kids have. There were several members of the cast that I knew. This was the first time that I realized how many parents volunteer to help these musicals run. Thanks to all the parents that help out!

11. Damn Yankees - I played this musical in high school. I had such a great time. I recently watched the TV version. Memories came flooding to my mind after watching it. After watching the TV version, I was shocked that the school district let us perform that musical. Now that I'm older, I see it in a different light.

12. Mama Mia - Okay, I saw this movie in the theater - I hope that counts. It was a girl's night and we laughed the whole time. Some of us were singing right along with the movie. I've never had so much fun watching a musical on the big screen before.

13.Arsenic and Old Lace - I saw this play at Jordan High after I graduated. I knew the main actor and I thought he did an amazing job. I laughed so hard and enjoyed the play so much.

14. Cash on Delivery - I took my two oldest kids to see this play at Mesa High. It was slapstick comedy and they absolutely loved it. It was fun to watch my kids enjoy the play.

15. Sound of Music - I love this musical and never get tired of watching it. My mom told me that her mission president let them watch it while they were on their mission. I didn't know that they could do that.

First Day of Preschool

Emily started preschool today. She is so excited to start preschool, especially with her new friends that she met at the open house. When I left her at the school, she went in with her friends and didn't look back. When she returned home, she was so excited to tell me all about her day at school. They made and ant showing the lower and upper case letter A. She was so proud of her art work. She is so ready to go to preschool.

Rain in September
